Bolands Events Warehouse

Project Title: Bolands Events Warehouse – A new Multi-Purpose Event Centre in Dublin city’s Docklands. Target Audience: The target audience for the events warehouse is the residential and commercial community of the Docklands area in Dublin city centre. The warehouse contains short and long term rental spaces that can cater for a high variety of events and purposes. These spaces included a community space, an exhibition space, a performance space, public and private event spaces, and a permanent public bar. Bolands Events Warehouse targets many age demographics , and is designed so that the building will be continuously occupied from morning till night, with a constantly changing occupants and functions. Project Abstract: The design proposes a new event centre as a social focal point to the busy docklands area as part of the new commercial campus being developed. The brief was created in response to the city’s increasing demand for public spaces. The building selected is an old Bolands Factory warehouse. The building holds important significance in irish history. While the original structure remained mostly untouched some adaptations were made in order to cater for accessibility, fire safety, and to create functioning flow and transition. Decisions were made to create some alterations in the existing building to create the best functioning, striking and universal design such as enlarging windows, creating new openings and removing some floor plates, as well as adding fire stairs. The building has a complex existing structure. There are large columns throughout the building interrupting the space, the design proposal had to be worked around these. While the new design intervention is prominent, the existing walls and materials are also highlighted as part of the design. New vibrant materials introduce bright and exciting colours as well as new textures against the existing stone, creating an impacting design. Sustainabbility was considered, selecting local and low impact materials. The concept for the design was based on the idea of large irregular shaped planes throughout the structure, contrasting with the existing square straight structure. These planes vary in shape, size, mobilily, and transparency, acting as walls, space dividers, doors, shading devices and design features. The concept is also translated in the design of the main stairs, installations, permanent furniture features in the building, and cut out voids throughout the spaces.
