Re-Presenting Lost Topoi

The thesis questions how we interpret loss through traces of the past, to inform present conditions that exist within Lisbon – not by abolishing context – but by re-presenting historical and cultural traces, bringing into question methods by which we understand space and place and how to recover the connection that is lost between the city and the Tagus. The resulting proposal presents a site journey that houses a campus – or institute – of discoveries, relating to new-world, mathematical and psychological discoveries. The proposal re-presents; through a stretched landscape, an origin point that is reached at the end of the journey. This origin point is St Jerónimos Monastery which significantly is the ‘endpoint’ of the journey through the site, but is also the beginning as it is the space through which the origin image is projected onto the landscape.
