This project is an experimental book called The Intricacies of Identity or How to Belong to Yourself, and it combines three of my favourite things in life: writing words, reading words, and designing words. It is a very personal exploration of identity and belonging, combining factual information with my own thoughts and experiences. I wrote and designed this book chapter by chapter, researching, exploring, and communicating my ideas through expressive means such as typography, imagery, linework, colour, and composition. Due to the quarantine I had to get very creative with the tools I had available to me, which were a small table, my laptop, my phone camera, a small scanner and a collection of paints, papers, string, needles, fruit, veg, and fabrics. The book is divided into four sections, four lenses through which identity and belonging are observed: origin, the self, the environment, and communication. These sections are also represented by four different colours. Additionally, the book consists of objective parts, which are factual research and information presented in a very clean design. The other parts are subjective experiences and thoughts, presented in a monotype typeface imitating a personal typewritten letter, supported by expressive black and white linework and paint.
