Doso

This projects brief asked the question: How might we unlock joy for people at train stations? I decided to create an installation, along with a campaign, which centres around improving commuters mental health therefor creating joy for everyone. Ireland has one of the highest rates of mental health illness in Europe. Many commuters spend hours at station platforms alone each week. In winter, the mornings and evenings are dark which leads to many people developing SAD (Seasonal affective disorder). I chose to use the theme of mental health and light to create a friend for everyone on station platforms. This installation is a chair size ‘Doso’, it glows from light blue in the morning to yellow, and then orange/purple at night. This is to help wake and set commuters up the in the morning and then wind down in the evening. Doso is a friend to be leaned on when times are tough or even to just stand around when you do not want to feel so alone. A campaign was also created which focussed on postcards that would be given out to commuters and encourages them to create new shaped Doso which could then be installed into their station of choice.
