Hello my name is James Boland I’m a recent graduate from Design (Honours) Visual Communications at South East Technological University Waterford. I’m a young designer from rural Co. Wexford and im looking for an internship with a design agency because creativity has been a core interest to me throughout my life. While my main interest is in Visual Design I also love athletics, hiking, abstract painting and 70’s rock music. I come from a family of creatives including interior designers, graphic designers, writers and architects so I’ve grown up around people with a keen interest in form, function, and attention to detail. I began painting and making things out of scrap cardboard when I was five and I have been strongly involved in art and design ever since. Throughout my four years at SETU Waterford I have created a solid process that works to deliver intriguing and effective ways of visually communicating a message. I have also completed various work experience roles at companies such as Totem Branding Agency, Think Print and Design and Design Print House. This experience has allowed me to fine tune my design process which allows me to maximise my potential as a creative professional. My style of design is mostly inspired by modernist design and my own imagery which includes found type and illustration (this can be viewed on my Instagram page). I also take my inspiration from the environment of the target audience in order to create a visual character that resonates with the viewer. While my main interest is in brand identity design I also have a love for typography. Having completed my thesis on digital typography in comparison to type for print in 2022, I began illustrating my own lettering for brand identities designed both for college and my own freelance projects. A recent project that is currently in production ‘Lecce Sans’ (inspired by the typography on the streets of Lecce in Italy) can be seen in my work below. I aspire to create change in the design world as I believe I have a unique and fine tuned process and style. I design to make beautiful things that have a positive impact on society. I don’t just see design as work, I also see it as something I love to do and be a part of. I have an outstanding work rate and an exceptional attitude towards design and I’m consistently seeking opportunities to better myself as a designer. I believe I have huge potential as a designer and if I were given an opportunity to gain work experience through an internship or future employment with a design agency, I’m confident this potential would flourish.
