“Social Steps” is a cross platform social application designed to help improve digital literacy and reduce social isolation of older adults. Age Action (2020) reports that only 17% of adults ages 65-74 in Ireland have basic or above basic overall digital skills. This hinders the older generation from participating in modern Irish society, due to their lack of digital literacy, which results in an increase in loneliness. Technology and digital applications are designed primarily for digital natives, often excluding users who may not have strong digital literacy or older adults who may suffer from age related impairments. These are unique UX problems faced by this project. “Social Steps” is created for two user groups, ‘mentors’ and ‘beginners’, encouraging connection and the sharing of digital skills. This project won the Universal Design Award in the IDI Graduate Awards 2020 and was shortlisted in the Interaction Design category.
